Add a video from video collection

Adding Videos in Fast Video Cataloger

A key task in Fast Video Cataloger is adding videos. To add videos, you will use the Add Videos window. As windows can be closed, if the Add Videos window is not visible, this window can be opened by clicking on Windows, clicking Panes, and then selecting “Add Videos”.

Selecting Video Files

Video files can be added to Fast Video Cataloger in the Add Videos window through three methods.

  1. From Windows Explorer, drag a video or group of videos to the topmost box in the Add Videos window.
  2. Use the Add Video button to select an individual video file for adding to your video catalog
  3. By using the Add Folders button, all videos in a selected folder will be added to the catalog.

Set Thumbnail Generation Interval

During the process for adding videos, Fast Video Cataloger scans an entire video to produce a series of thumbnails at regularly spaced intervals. In the Preferences dialog, an option exists allowing you to specify the default number of minutes and seconds between each frame used for thumbnails. The value specified in the Preferences may not be appropriate for all videos. To make it easy for the user, Fast Video Cataloger presents an option to choose a different period as you add videos without revisiting the Preferences window. While adding a batch of videos using any of the above methods, you can override the default value here.

Fill Out Shared Properties

Using the fields here, you can set common values for the properties of all videos in this batch. This is useful when dealing with multiple video files that have similar characteristics. For example, perhaps you have a collection of videos from your personal camcorder. In the collection are four movies from your friend’s wedding and six videos from your son’s birthday party. Adding the photos in two batches allows you to specify keywords only twice. You can add further details later, while completing the shared properties now makes the process of adding the videos fast with less entry.

The five shared properties that can be entered now are covered below.

  1. Keywords are useful as tags for your videos. Enter a new keyword in the drop down menu, or select any of the previously used keywords.
  2. Specifying a Genre enables you to quickly locate any video from your collection by searching for a matching Genre. You can select multiple genres to make it easier to find.
  3. Ratings are important because you can score your video from 1 to 5, quickly identifying your most valuable videos in your collection.
  4. The Link field can be populated with a URL or web site address. This is useful for documenting the source of the video or a web site where the video has been used.
  5. The Video Cast properties are for the purpose of recording the actors in the videos. To make this step easy, you may drag an actor from the Actors window.

Index Videos

After entering the shared properties for the videos you are adding, click Start to begin the indexing process.

Fast video cataloger review at find my soft

Fast Video Cataloger is reviewed at the find my soft web site.

Usually download sites just gives away Awards without even looking at the software ( to get backlinks to their site) and I just ignore their request to get a link. Find my soft however, seems to have actually installed and tested the program, they invested the time and effort of creating a video. I wish more sites would follow their example.

Go to http://fast-video-cataloger.findmysoft.com/ to read the Review or download it to test yourself.

We got a negative feedback note as well and this add credibility. No software is pure gold. The wording in the review is that “The interface and functionality don’t seem too intuitive, especially when beginners use the application”. . That might actually be true, I just wished they had spend some more time with the program.

We recently added the getting started guide to make it a bit easier to get started. Fast video cataloger is designed with efficient workflow in mind, we spend much focus on the details here. You can setup a working environment to suit your needs with the dockable user interface and this will obviously be more complex than a simple step by step wizard like interface. However, I think that the style of interface we have now will enable you to work much quicker once you get started.

Viewing a series of captured video clip frames

Series of captured video clip frames

The quick overview possibility is part of the core in Fast Video Cataloger, this window is where all features connected to the captured frames lives. The Video Scene Window is a multi-purpose interface for interacting with your video collection. This window has 2 main courses of action. The default action begins after clicking the left mouse button on a scene thumbnail image. This will begin playing the video at the scene selected. The secondary action is available by hovering the mouse pointer above a thumnail image, and then pressing the right mouse button. After clicking the right mouse button, you will see a menu allowing you to perform several other actions. We cover these additional actions in more detail below.

Use image as video thumbnail

Selecting this from the menu causes this thumbnail image to viewed when browsing the video catalog window. This is convenient when you want a particular image from a scene to be used to identify an entire video.

Keywording

At the heart of the program is a fast database of keywords that represent the scenes in your video collection. Use this selection from the right click menu to edit the keywords, also known as “tags”, to the scene for the image. Using good keywords here will make it easier to find a video or scene from your video catalog.
Use image for new actor portrait
Any thumbnail image can be used to represent an actor. Selecting this from the right click menu will cause the chosen image to used for a new actor. A dialog will appear, populated with this image as the actor’s portrait.

Remove this captured frame

To make Fast Video Cataloger more beneficial while browsing and searching, use this selection to remove thumbnail images that are irrelevant or have no value. As Fast Video Cataloger creates the thumbnails at regular intervals, not all automatically generated thumbnails will be useful when searching or browsing. Removing the image using this method clears up any visual clutter and allows you to get to the scene or video you want.

Play from here

Choosing this selection from the right click menu will cause the video to begin playing the video, starting at the time corresponding to the selected frame. This menu selection is the same as the default action and is provided as an accessibility convenience.

Copy

This selection copies the image to the clipboard. This makes it easy to paste the image for use or modification into another program, such as Windows Paint, Microsoft Word, GIMP, or Photoshop.

Save As

Using this menu choice from the right click menu causes the image to be saved as a file. This feature enables quickly saving the image so that it may be used for other purposes.

Summary

The right click selection along with the additional items available will be indispensable while cataloging your video collection. Use the default action, the left click mouse button, to view the videos in your catalog.

Never a broken video clip link – Using the Repair Tool

intact links in your video collection

Solid linking in your video catalogs

Making sure all links are intact

A lot of times while cleaning up our computer files, we tend to move things around. If you are in your documents and intact links in your video collection you move a video from one folder to the next the path will become broken. This normally would cause a problem; however, with the repair tool you have a chance to fix that. The repair tool gives you the option to repair your videos and images. Within the repair window you can also scan for images. You can scan for broken videos to make sure all your videos are operating correctly. If you have videos that have been archived and the device is not connected to your computer at the time you do the scan the path will be reported as broken. You will have the option to either remove or repair the video. If you want to remove the videos with the broken paths simply select them and click remove. To repair you have the option to supply a search path and click repair and then the program will do its search. You can do a scan for your images as well, and the same exact thing will happen, the paths for all your images will be checked.

Scan for broken video clip links in your video collection

You also have a “scan for image” tab. This is not the same as scanning your images for broken paths. When you click on the scan image tab it gives you the option to scan for all companion images. It may be easy to get a little confused about the repairing images scan and scanning for images, just remember when you are in the repair images tab, you are scanning for broken links that you can repair or remove. If you are in the scan for image tab you are scanning your videos for companion images. Once you have finished your scan for companion images you will be presented with a checklist of images. You can add companion images as you see fit. Simply check the box next to the image and then select “Add Selected Images” and your image will then be added as a companion image for that video. As you see the repair tool is used for much more than repairing broken paths. Using it to add companion images is very important because you may not like the companion images that are uploaded for you or you may want to create a companion image for a cover image. You may even just want to create a few companion images to have some still shots, or even to use them for actor’s portraits. The repair tool can help you find and add companion images as well as fixing broken paths for images and video.
