Glossary¶
Actor¶
An actor is someone that is part of a video. You could also use actors for entities related to a video, for example, the company that produced a movie or the item that a commercial is advertising.
Action¶
An action is an FVC built-in command or a user-defined command created from the preferences. Actions are run from the Actions window. You can assign shortcuts to Actions.
Archive¶
Archive is the process of tagging a video to a specific storage media.
Attract windows¶
Name of the windows that automatically cycle through the content of the video catalog.
Auto index¶
The feature that watches a folder for changed videos to be indexed by the program
Bin¶
A video bin is like a folder where you can put videos.
Cast¶
The cast of a video is the collection of actors associated with the video.
Clip¶
A video clip is a segment from a video. It has a start and an end time. You can create video playlists by listing video clips.
Codec¶
A codec is software that is responsible for decoding a compressed audio or video stream to raw image data that can be displayed. Fast Video Cataloger uses direct show codecs.
Extended properties¶
Extended properties are extra custom properties. Internally they are stored separate from the video and they can differ between catalogs. Extended properties let you add custom properties to videos or thumbnails. When the program extacts video properties from a file, like xmp data, that is store as extended properties.

Extended thumbnail properties¶
An extended property for a videe thumbnail, i.e. a point in time in a video. Note is a build in extended property that you can edit from the details view.
Frame¶
A frame is one single screenshot in a video.
Index¶
To scan a video for thumbnails and add it to the catalog.
Keywording¶
Keywording is the process of attaching keywords to a video or a video scene. Keywording is done from the keywording window.
Keyword group¶
A keyword can be put on one or several groups to help organize catalogs with many keywords.
Media¶
Media is what videos are stored on like; for example, a hard drive, CD, or DVD.
Playlist¶
A video playlist is a sequence of video clips.
Scene¶
A scene is a part of a video represented by a scene thumbnail in the program.
Scene Thumbnail¶
The image representing a scene in the Video Scenes Window
Smart Bin¶
A bin that is automatically populated by a search query. When you create a bin you select if it's a normal bin or a smart bin.
Special folder¶
A special folder in FVC is a symbolic folder name that will be replaced with an absolute path. For example, [dropbox] is a special folder that will evaluate to the dropbox folder on your computer.
Subtitle¶
A subtitle is a part of a transcript. It has a text and a start and end time, i.e. where in the video the text can be heard.
Tabbed document area¶
The center windows work area. By default, you will find the window showing the scenes of a video here.
Transcript¶
A transcript is a text of the words spoken in a video. The transcript consists of a number of subtitles
Video¶
Video is a video file in any format.
Video Thumbnail¶
The image representing a video in the Video catalog list
Video wall¶
Window in Fast Video Cataloger that presents videos as a collection of animated frames.
